Side Event: Interactive Workshop: Co-Creating Tools to Develop Sustainable Procurement Criteria for a Resilient Pharmaceutical Supply Chain

Hosted by Health Proc Europe as facilitator of the Alliance for Procurement Impact (API), this interactive workshop will bring together hospitals, health authorities, and the pharmaceutical industry to co-develop practical sustainability criteria for the procurement of medicines and vaccines. Participants will explore real-world challenges, share best practices and design solutions that strengthen both the sustainability and resilience of Europe’s pharmaceutical supply chain.
Purpose of the Workshop
Across Europe, efforts to include sustainability criteria in the procurement of medicines and vaccines are growing, yet the process remains fragmented and inconsistent. Tenders often lack transparency, reinvent requirements from scratch, and apply shifting or qualitative criteria that are difficult to compare. Without a common framework, suppliers struggle to showcase their achievements effectively, and valuable data is underused. At the same time, technology that could ease the process and enable more consistent, data-driven assessment is not yet widely applied.
This session will address these challenges by exploring how a common reference set of sustainability criteria could be defined, drawing inspiration from countries that have already developed promising approaches. The aim is to align participants around shared challenges, identify practical solutions and tools, and examine how advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence can help define, source, and assess sustainability criteria with greater precision and efficiency, moving beyond price alone.
